1. What is a second opinion and why should I get one?

A second opinion is an evaluation of your medical history, your diagnosis, and your treatment plan by a medical specialist. The independent consulting physician will either confirm your diagnosis and treatment or recommend an alternate diagnosis and/or treatment plan. This physician may recommend that you undergo additional diagnostic tests. Research has shown that between 20% and 60% of patients have a change of diagnosis or treatment plan after their second opinion.

2. When should I get a medical second opinion?

It is a patient’s right to request for a medical second opinion. Patients should request for a medical second opinion if they are uncertain about their diagnosis or if their treatment options are complex, high risk or unpleasant. You may want to consider a medical second opinion especially if:

  • you’re recommended for a major surgery
  • you’ve been recommended a treatment option which you are unsure about
  • you’ve been diagnosed with a life threatening or crippling condition
  • you’ve been prescribed a long-term prescription
  • you’ve been diagnosed with a rare disease
  • your doctor is uncertain about your condition or diagnosis

3. Who are the medical specialists providing me with the second opinion?

Our medical specialists are the top specialists in their respective fields and have been hand picked by our team to provide experienced medical specialist opinions. They are currently practicing at the Malaysia’s leading private hospitals, and are highly respected in their fields.

4. What do I need to provide to obtain a medical second opinion?

In order to provide you with a medical specialist opinion, our medical specialist will need:

  • Answers to our medical questionnaire (includes your past medical history, including chronic illness, allergies, surgeries, and prescription medication)
  • Medical images pertaining to your condition (e.g.: MRI, X-ray, CT Scan etc, usually given to you in the form of CD or USB thumb drive)
  • Any supporting documentation, such as PDF and/or images of test results etc

5. How is the second opinion provided and how long does it take?

Once you have submitted your request and uploaded your medical documents and images, the medical specialist opinion should be made available to you within 72 hours. Once it is complete, you will receive an email notification and PDF version of your medical specialist opinion.

6. Can I get a second opinion for someone else?

Yes, our system allows for medical specialist opinion requests on behalf of family members provided that you have that person’s permission and/or are the patient’s legal guardian.

In order to provide your family member with a medical specialist opinion, our medical specialist will need:

  • Answers to our medical questionnaire (includes your past medical history, including chronic illness, allergies, surgeries, and prescription medication)
  • Medical images pertaining to your condition (e.g.: MRI, X-ray, CT Scan etc, usually given to you in the form of CD or USB thumb drive)
  • Any supporting documentation, such as PDF and/or images of test results etc

7. How much do your services cost?

Our standard specialist medical opinion and radiology second opinion services cost RM320 per opinion.

8. Can I pay for this service with my insurance?

There is currently no provision for paying via insurance. However, it is very much a feature that we are looking to include in the near future.

9. Will my employer pay for this service?

We are currently working to link up with employers to provide our services as an employee benefit. Please consult your human resource department about linking your company up with us.

10. Will my primary doctor be upset if I get a second opinion?

Consulting another doctor for a second opinion is a patient’s right and definitely in the best interests of your health. Your primary doctor should understand this and some may even recommend it as a professional opinion.

11. Can I choose which specialist to consult?

Typically, our service will automatically assign you the most appropriate specialist based on the specialty you have selected. However there is an option to choose your preferred specialist from our panel for a premium fee of RM50.

12. What benefits do I get from choosing Medical Opinion Asia to obtain my second opinion?

13. How does the data I provide travel across the internet? Is it secure?

As your privacy is very important to us, information transferred to and from our servers is always SSL-encrypted and secured by industry standard firewalls. In addition, this information will never be handled by anyone other than Medical Opinion Asia’s panel of specialists and administrators.

14. Can you store my medical records or images?

Yes, once a medical specialist opinion has been requested, the images provided can be stored for up to a year, for a fee of RM50 per year.

15. What are the benefits of allowing you to store my medical records or images?

Comparison with past records and images may be important for accuracy of your diagnosis.  Storing them online allows great convenience as it gives specialists quick and easy access upon subsequent consultations. There is no need to go through the hassle of finding them, or risk losing them.

16. Can I use medical records that are in another language other than English?

At the present we are unfortunately unable to process any medical records in languages other than English. If your records are in any other language please do translate them before sending them to us.

17. What if I have additional questions after receiving my second opinion report?

We are currently working on a feedback system for our patients, but as of now it is not yet available. However, rest assured that we will endeavour to make all reports clear and understandable.

18. I am a specialist who would like to join your network. How can I do this?

19. If I am not in Malaysia, can I still use your service?

Yes, as long as you have access to internet and can send us your records/images.
